What is Intensive Counseling?
Genesee Valley BOCES provides services to students from 22 school districts in the counties of Genesee, Livingston, Steuben and Wyoming.  There is also the ability to cross contract with other districts, providing services to students and families outside our catchment area.

BOCES Intensive Counseling Services assist students, ages 5-21, who are experiencing school related and/or family problems that disrupt their education.  The program is designed to support the educational programming, provide ongoing structure and support, as well as provide the intensive individual, group and family therapy that students may require.

Intensive Counseling Services Include:

Educational Component
Students participate in curriculum that has been aligned with the NYSED Standards and individualized to meet the needs of each student.  Classrooms are limited to small groups of students, with a teacher and at least one paraprofessional.  Classrooms may be center-based or located in a local school district.

Counseling Component
Counseling opportunities include individual and/or group therapy as well as family therapy.  The student's Committee on Special Education determines the services a student receives.  All counseling services are provided by therapists who are certified in one of the following areas:
  • School Psychology
  • School Counseling
  • School Social Work

Crisis intervention services are also provided at each site.

Training
All professionals have ongoing educational and mental health training.  Training in Life Space Crisis Intervention, Therapeutic Crisis Intervention, Educational Best Practices and Mental Health Issues, takes place on a regular basis.  Departmental meetings and peer supervision also occur regularly.

Consultation Services
Our students, staff, families, community and school district personnel have the option of meeting with:

Psychiatrist - A physician who can provide comprehensive psychiatric assessment, order medication and provide consultations as indicated on a student's IEP.

Clinical Psychologist - A doctoral level psychologist who can provide diagnostic testing, treatment planning, behavioral interventions, and consultations on an as needed basis.

Our psychiatrist and psychologist collaborate to assess, plan and monitor the progress of students and families.

Teaming
Members of the student's team meet regularly to assess and monitor progress.  Goals, objectives and recommendations are reviewed and updated on a regular basis.

Quality Educational Mental Health Services
School Based Therapeutic Educational model, providing comprehensive, individualized assistance.
Counseling is a process which focuses on personal growth, behavior change and maximizing an individual's potential.  The primary purpose of counseling is to facilitate the student's learning process through enhancement of self-concept and improvement of skills to cope with life stresses.  Methods may include individual, group and family counseling.

Individual counseling provides the student with an opportunity for the development of a supportive relationship with a mental health professional.

The group process enables students to learn and practice prosocial skills in a safe environment.  It also offers a unique opportunity for students to realize that others have similar feelings and issues while receiving feedback from their peers.

Family counseling provides for increased communication between home and school.  Family counseling also includes building on family strengths, patterns, and resources that maximize their functioning.

Crisis intervention is provided as appropriate to de-escalate situations in which a child is temporarily out of control.
