Interscholastic Mathematics Competition Rules - Senior High
Rules of Competition

Participation and Team Structure:
- The team will be composed of nine students.
- The Senior High Interscholastic Mathematics Competition is designed for students in Grades 9 – 12.
- No team may be comprised of more than four seniors.
- Each team must include at least two members from the ninth or tenth grade.
- Each team member will participate in all sections of the test.
- All students must attend scheduled competitions to register a score, no exceptions are permitted.
- Upon arrival at the meet, each advisor will list the members on the team answer sheet; the team sheet will include each student's name and current grade level.
- Each school may bring up to 2 alternates - the alternates' scores will count as an individual score (for medal contention), but will not count towards the team score.

Materials:
- Scrap paper will be provided by GV BOCES.
- Each participant should bring his or her own sharpened pencils. ? No compasses, rulers, mathematical tables or other devices will be allowed, unless indicated on a student’s IEP or 504.
- Teams must provide their own calculators (see events for type allowed).
- Graph paper as needed.

Events:
- Students will be reminded that unfair play may result in disqualification.
- After the signal to begin is given by the proctor, the timing of the event will begin.
- If for any reason a problem must be dropped, no replacement will be made and no credit will be given for any answer to a discarded problem.
- For a problem to be dropped coaches must be in consensus to do so.
- The test will consist of three parts as follows:

Individual Questions:
- 5 sections /three questions per section (varying levels of difficulty)
- Question 1 is worth 1 pt, question 2 is worth 2 pts & question 3 is worth 3 pts
- 10 minutes given for each section
- Each section covers a specific topic
- Only scientific calculators will be allowed

Team Questions:
- 10 questions
- Each question is worth 2 pts
- 25 minutes
- Graphing calculators allowed

Relays:
- Two relays
- Each school will have 1 team consisting of 9 members per team
- There will be 3 sections of 3 students
- No calculators allowed
- Only 1 answer per team can be submitted
- The points per section are as follows:
Maximum time allowed: 6 minutes
- 1 st section correct answer: 2 points
- 2 nd section Correct answer: 4 points
- 3 rd section Correct answer: 8 points

Meet 1:
- Section 1 - Linear equations and inequalities
- Section 2 - Logic
- Section 3 - Functions
- Section 4 - Angles related to parallel lines or any polygon
- Section 5 - Word Problems: Coin, Investment, Age, and Consecutive Integers
Meet 2:
- Section 1 - Geometry of Circles
- Section 2 - Pythagorean Relationships
- Section 3 - Factoring
- Section 4 - Systems of equations in two variables
- Section 5 - Rational Expressions
Meet 3:
- Section 1 - Statistics - mean, median, mode, standard deviation
- Section 2 - Probability and Binomial Expansion Theorem
- Section 3 - Quadratic equations and complex numbers
- Section 4 - Exponents and Radicals
- Section 5 - Transformational Geometry and Coordinates
Meet 4:
- Section 1 - Logarithms
- Section 2 - Coordinate Geometry
- Section 3 - Area, perimeter, and volume
- Section 4 - Right Triangle Trigonometry
- Section 5 - Matrices, operations, and determinates of a 2x2 only
* All questions are written in alignment with New York State Common Core Standards. -
Proctoring:
- Each team will be actively proctored by those advisors assigned to the testing room.
- Advisors will proctor for the team and relay sections.
- Any suspicion of unfair play must immediately be brought to the coordinator's attention.
- Any appeals of grading or scoring must be made to the coordinator prior to the completion of the competition and a majority agreement will be made.
- A rotating chaperoning/proctoring schedule for county and state meets has been created; this was done randomly. In the year(s) that your district is listed, the advisor/coach is expected to attend both meets. Advisors who are scheduled to chaperone in a given year will be asked to commit, in writing, six weeks prior to the event. If a district is unable to provide a chaperone for any reason, GV BOCES will send someone in their place, and the district(s) will be charged for the replacement.

Marking the Answers:
- At the end of each event, answer papers will be collected, taken to the score room and corrected by advisors assigned to the checking and scoring room.
- No advisor may correct an answer sheet of his or her own team members, answers are either right or wrong, and no partial credit is given.
- Answers must appear in the appropriate space on the answer sheet. Answers written elsewhere will receive no credit.
- If a specific answer form is required for any problem, the answer(s) for that problem must be written in the required form.
- Team sheets are filled in after each set of questions has been scored.

Awards:
There will be one awards ceremony following the last meet. The awards will be determined as such:
- After each meet the teams will be given a team score (which is the total points from the individual, relay, and team sections). The scores from each of the 4 competitions will be added together. The highest cumulative team scores (TOTAL POINTS) will determine the top three schools. The top three teams will each be awarded trophies.
- The winning individuals will be the highest scoring students (total points) based on the best three out of four meets.
- The fifteen top scoring students (from the North and from the South) will be invited to participate on the All-Star team for the Monroe County Math League Meet and the New York State Math League Meet. (Top scoring alternates will also be recognized with an invitation to participate where slots are available).

Advisors Responsibilities:
- Recruit at least nine students to form a team.
- Practice with students for the meets.
- Make appropriate travel arrangements to and from meets.
- Accompany the team to each meet.
- Remind students prior to each meet to avoid unfair play.
- Prepare team sheets, including name and grade for each participating student.
- Proctor and/or correct tests during the meet (including county and state meets).
- Distribute newsletter.
- Adhere to the rotating chaperoning schedule.
- Advisors should notify GV BOCES as soon as a closure or delay is announced for their school district.

GV BOCES Responsibilities:
- Plan and coordinate the Interscholastic Mathematics Competitions.
- Provide a lead proctor for each region and level.
- Provide awards.
- Develop and distribute a newsletter following each meet.

Problem Writer's Responsibilities:
- Develop and write questions for each competition.
- Tests should be written to encourage wide participation of Senior High students with a few questions to challenge the most able students.
- Provide GV BOCES with a clear typed copy of all questions as well as an answer key.

Competition Cancellation:
- If a competing school is closed or on a delay on the day of competition, the competition will be postponed and a make up date will be scheduled.
