COSER 509 Vocational Assessment Program: ACT WorkKeys

Program goals and components:

This program uses curriculum and on-site evaluations to gather information on a student’s academic development, interests, and aptitudes. The program integrates the ACT WorkKeys framework to improve career counseling, placement decisions, and employability outcomes.

The key components of the program are:

•Access to the ACT WorkKeys Curriculum
•WorkKeys Assessments: These include three core tests: Applied Math, Graphic Literacy, and Workplace Documents.
•Job Profiling: This aligns a student’s skills with the requirements of specific jobs.
•National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC): Students can earn a nationally recognized certificate at the Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum level based on their scores on the core WorkKeys assessments.

How the program works:

1. Access to ACT WorkKeys Curriculum Teachers are provided access to the ACT WorkKeys Curriculum to help prepare students for the assessments.
2. Assessment Facilitation The Genesee Valley BOCES administers the official ACT WorkKeys Assessments.
3. Career Alignment Assessment results are compared with ACT Job Profiling data and local job requirements. This information is shared with the student’s home school district, including identified areas for remediation if needed. 4. Retesting and Credentialing Students have the opportunity to retest to improve their scores. The National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) is issued based on their final results.
5. Counseling and Reporting Each student receives a written report containing an appraisal of their performance and individualized recommendations. Credentials are also issued upon completion.

New York State offers students multiple pathways to graduation through the 4+1 option. Alongside the four required Regents exams (ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies), students may complete an additional approved pathway assessment. One option is through the Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) Pathway, which recognizes career readiness skills and prepares students for success in the workplace.

How WorkKeys connects to graduation

•NYSED has approved the ACT WorkKeys NCRC as a work readiness credential that can be used to meet the CDOS Commencement Credential requirements.
•The CDOS Credential can serve as the “+1” Pathway toward a Regents or Local Diploma.
•This allows students to graduate by demonstrating career readiness, not only traditional academic testing.

Why this matters for students & families

•Provides flexibility for students with strengths in hands-on learning and applied skills.
•Prepares students for college, career, or direct entry into the workforce.
•Offers recognition of workplace skills that are valuable beyond high school.
