VOICES OF GV BOCES: Ava M.

“I guess I chose the health field because I’ve been in the hospital. I’ve been in positions where it’s been really tough—where you just want to get out of there. And I think being there for someone, and being able to help people in the same situation I’ve been in, would make me feel a lot better about everything.
I’m kind of open, but right now I mainly want to be in pediatric oncology. I haven’t had anyone close to me with cancer, but I guess being in tough situations… I’d know how other kids would feel being in tough situations, even if it’s not the same disease or disorder.
I picked this program because it’s more hands-on. After school, I’m thinking about going to a two-year college, getting my RN, and then getting my bachelor’s at a different school—working as an RN.
Working at the nursing home, my favorite part is having the ability to make them happy. Some people don’t even have family that visit them, so it’s nice being able to do at least a little something to make their day—even if they don’t remember it in the long term.
I think this program helps because it’s learning basic information that will help you in college. A lot of people don’t have the opportunity to start off learning the basics about medical things. So it’s a good opportunity to learn more before actually getting your degree.”
