Alumni Darnell LaPlant and his former teacher taking a photo together after he presented to a Sports Science class.

Darnell’s journey into sports performance started with a simple love for the game of basketball, but quickly grew into something much deeper.

As a young athlete, he was always looking for ways to improve. That drive led him to the weight room early on, where he found a new kind of passion. By high school, he was spending hours training before and after the school day, not just to get stronger, but to understand how and why athletes improve. That curiosity became something more when he began helping classmates, offering guidance, and realizing how much he enjoyed being someone others could look to.

That sense of purpose continued to grow during his time in the Sports Science program at Genesee Valley BOCES. The expectations pushed him to think beyond the classroom and take ownership of his learning. It challenged him, prepared him, and gave him a glimpse of what his future could look like.

After graduating, Darnell took that momentum with him to the University at Buffalo, where he studied Exercise Science and stepped into the world of Division I athletics. From working with football programs at Buffalo and UConn to gaining experience in private performance training, each opportunity helped shape his understanding of what it means to coach, lead, and connect with athletes.

His journey eventually brought him to Duke University, where he worked with a wide range of teams and athletes. There, he not only developed his skills, but also built relationships that continue to influence his path. Every new place, every new challenge, pushed him to grow in ways he never expected.

Now, as he prepares to begin a graduate assistant position with Virginia Commonwealth University’s women’s basketball team, Darnell is returning to the sport that first inspired him. It is a full circle moment, one built on years of hard work, sacrifice, and belief in what was possible.

What stands out most in Darnell’s story is his willingness to step outside of his comfort zone. Leaving home, embracing new environments, and building connections across the country opened doors he never imagined. Along the way, he discovered that the impact he has on others is just as meaningful as the work itself.

When he returned to speak with students at GV BOCES, it meant something special. Sitting in the same classroom where his journey began, he was able to share not just his experiences, but a message of possibility.

For students considering a path in sports science, his advice comes from experience. Take chances. Reach out. Be willing to learn from anyone and everyone. The path is not always easy, but for those who are passionate, it is worth every step.
