Cosmetology students at the Mount Morris CTE Center recently put their skills into practice by giving haircuts to first, fifth, and sixth grade students from the BOCES Elementary Program. The younger students enjoyed the opportunity to receive fresh haircuts in a welcoming and supportive environment. Under the guidance of their teachers, the cosmetology students practiced important techniques while gaining real-world experience. The activity also helped them build confidence as they worked with real clients. It was a great example of collaboration between programs and hands-on learning at Mount Morris.

Darnell LaPlant, a 2023 graduate of the Sports Science Academy, returned to the classroom to share his journey with current students and offer insight into careers in strength and conditioning. After earning his degree in Exercise Science from the University at Buffalo, LaPlant has gained valuable experience as a strength and conditioning assistant with UConn Football and is currently interning at Duke University, where he has worked with men’s and women’s lacrosse, fencing, baseball, and women’s rowing.

By returning to speak with students, LaPlant provided a real-world example of how dedication, education, and hands-on experience can lead to exciting opportunities in the sports performance field. His visit gave students a chance to ask questions, learn about the next steps after graduation, and see how the skills they are learning now can translate into future careers. This summer, he will begin a graduate assistant position as the strength and conditioning coach for the Virginia Commonwealth University women’s basketball team. We wish him the best as he continues to build his career and inspire the next generation of sports science professionals.
